Moon is a Ball (The)
by Ed Franck
Age Range: 6-8
Panda and Squirrel are the best of friends. They live near each other –
Panda in her cave in the mountains and Squirrel in her nest in the hollow of a fallen tree nearby. The pair are virtually inseparable doing everything together. In these nine delectable stories, the friends try to capture the moon, take journeys together, one of which merely lasts two steps, become the unlikely parents to a newly hatched duckling, have fun playing, and try to find out what the world is like upside down. When Panda plans a trip alone, the ingenious Squirrel plays a trick to ensure that she doesn’t stray far. Despite the odd argument, their friendship is unbreakable and as they discover, they can’t live without each other.
Ed Franck is one of Belgium’s most important and innovative children’s writers. These thoughtful and playful stories, translated by David Colmer, can be philosophical as Panda and Squirrel ponder life and the meaning of friendship. Sometimes they test the boundaries of their friendship and sometimes they learn that they miss each other when one of them is not there.
Franck’s conversational and humorous narrative speaks directly to children and the gorgeous watercolour artwork by Korean award-winning illustrator The Tjong-Khing with its soft colour hues, enchanting landscapes and irresistible protagonists make this a beautiful standout storybook.
