Waiting for Goliath
by Antje Damm
Age Range: Under_5
Bear has been sitting and waiting since dawn. “I’m waiting for Goliath,” he tells everyone. “Goliath is coming! He’s my best friend.” At last the bus pulls up, but no one gets out. Bear is loyal and patient, he is sure his friend will turn up. Even when the birds fly south and the first snow falls his faith is still unwavering. He sits alone on a bench and continues to wait, finally falling asleep. The seasons pass and when Bear awakes from his hibernation, he hears a noise. Goliath is coming!
Award-winning and best-selling German illustration and author, Antje Damm has created a warm and unusual story with a completely unexpected ending – Goliath’s identity is a big surprise! The unique illustrations begin with Damm creating a diorama from cardboard and photographing the scenes, giving the illustrations a richness and depth as the seasons change throughout the story. Bear cuts a lonely figure as he waits for his friend and the illustrations aptly portray this while the text coveys a sense of hope. Waiting for Goliath is a lovely tale about the importance of friendship.
