Queen of Seagulls
by Ruta Briede
Age Range: 6-8
Renata is always angry. She is beset on all sides of her flat by noise – children laughing loudly, neighbours listening to loud music and most of all the shrieking of the seagulls’ overhead. Renata complains bitterly to the Local Council and steals the food her neighbour leaves out for the birds. Then she is accosted by a whole new noise when her new neighbour plays his accordion on his balcony. Worse still, all the songs are about seagulls!
The screeching seagulls hovering over her balcony seem to be trying to tell Renata something. Why is she so keen on seagull food and why do the accordionist’s songs make her so cross? Renata needs to remember who she really is and uncover the truth before it’s too late.
Queen of Seagulls is an unusual and refreshing picture book from Latvia by author and illustrator Rūta Briede. Renata must find the answers to the questions about herself in order to overcome her past mistakes. This is a magical modern-day fable, beautifully translated by Elīna Brasliņa, with expressive and comic pen and ink drawings that will make you smile.
Briede illustrates books, draws comics, designs puppet shows and teaches at the Art Academy of Lativa. She is the creator of the Bicki-Buck Books series and the puppet stage show based on this story of Renata.
