‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Květa Pacovská
Age Range: Under_5
This is no ordinary alphabet! It is an extraordinary journey through the letters created by one of the world’s most celebrated award-winning illustrators, Květa Pacovská. In her usual innovative style, Pacovská provides such rich saturated colour combinations and textures. This abstract interpretation shows letters that sometimes appear more than once, as embossed pages with silver foil, as a crazy mishmash of lines, windows and popups, all of which are emblazoned across the pages. An ‘A’ has eyes peering out of its shape across a double-page spread whilst ‘B’ pops boldly out of the page. ‘F’ is a jumble of scribbled ‘f’s’ while a stark ‘T’, on a plain white page, is followed by an array of colour in the shape of a man with outstretched arms.
Alphabet is a stylish square hardcover book presented in a slipcase. Pacovská certainly manages to take the art of the picture book to a whole new level and it will delight and absorb readers of all ages.
