Stone Light (The)
by Kai Meyer
Age Range: 9-11
The Stone Light is the second book in Kai Meyer’s fantasy trilogy following on from The Flowing Queen which won the Marsh Award for Children’s Books in Translation in 2007.
Merle, the Flowing Queen and Vermithrax have escaped from Venice after it has been taken over by the Pharoah. Now they must fly into the dusty, rocky depth of Hell in order to find Lord Light and ask for his help to save Venice. After a series of encounters and adventures we leave Merle at the end of this second book facing an unknown future.
Despite being beautifully crafted novels with the poetic prose captured perfectly by translator Anthea Bell, they require a level of sophistication by the reader in order to follow their many threads. It is a distinct advantage to read one after the other otherwise it’s often difficult to remember some of the complexity.
