‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Finn Cooks
by Birte Muller
Age Range: 6-8
Like most children Finn does not like healthy, balanced meals and when his mother
explains to him that the body needs protein and calcium, he is not convinced by
her recommendations. Finn would much rather have something more exciting
instead like chocolate or sweets. One evening Finn proposes exchanging duties
with his parents for just one day and to be in charge of the shopping and the
kitchen. When he goes to the supermarket he gets carried away and comes back
home with all his favourite foods. Finn suffers the consequences though, when his
recipe of chocolate doughnuts and cheese curls has an adverse effect and he
ends up with a terrible tummy ache.
This is a picture book that will be useful for parents and carers who are trying to put forward to their children the idea of a sensible balanced diet. The message is put across brilliantly and without being didactic or educational and the bright, colourful illustrations are highly expressive and superbly match the spirit of the text.
