A Kalle Blomkvist Mystery (1): Master Detective
by Astrid Lindgren
Age Range: 9-11
Kalle has always known he is a Master Detective. Although he’s never actually foiled a crime this is only because he hasn’t had the opportunity. After all, it’s difficult when nothing bad ever happens in your small sleepy town. This is all about to change when the mysterious Uncle Einar comes to stay with his friend Eva-Lotta’s parents. Kalle senses there is something deeply suspicious about Einer and decides to keep a close eye on him, which turns out to be just as well.
Kalle and his best friends Eva-Lotta and Anders are knights of the White Roses: every summer they do battle with the dastardly Red Roses, (Sixten, Jonte and Benka), in the Wars of the Roses, (named after a period in English history). They spy on one another, write insulting letters, have swordfights and take turns in stealing the Great Stonytotem. Together with his friends and their friendly local policeman Constable Björk, there isn’t a mystery that Kalle Blomkvist cannot solve.
Master Detective: A Kalle Blomkvist Mystery is the first of three newly translated novels about Kalle Blomkvist and his friends by the world-famous author of Pippi Longstocking, Astrid Lindgren. First published in Swedish in 1946, these well written, funny and fast-paced detective mysteries, still have a freshness even after 72 years and are sure to appeal to fans of Astrid Lindgren.
