How to be Your Dog's Best Friend
by Elena Bulay
Age Range: 9-11
The inspiration for this book is based on a true story about Russian author and illustrator Elena Bulay, (Lena in the story), and her rescue dog Jo. When Lena got Jo, she hardly knew anything about dogs and made a lot of mistakes so she wanted to create a guidebook for readers to help them understand what dogs are like, how to communicate with them and how to take care of them.
Told through Lena’s own beautiful illustrations How to be Your Dog’s Best Friend is packed with fascinating facts and useful tips about caring for a dog of your own. From learning about the different types of dogs there are; where and how to choose a dog; preparing your home and the important items you will need for feeding, grooming, walking and training. It also tackles visits to the vet; travelling with your dog and looking after an elderly dog as well as behavioural issues such as how to deal with your dog if they behave badly or are scared.
Lena also makes clear that “a dog is not a toy” and although they are a big responsibility the rewards of having a canine companion are well worth the effort.
With expert contributions from a Dog behaviourist, social activist and vet there are details of the “Five Freedoms” – internationally accepted standards of care in animal welfare – as well as useful resources such as international Dog charities, organisations and rehoming centres at the back of the book.
How to be Your Dog’s Best Friend, translated by Lena Traer, is a combination of personal experience and expert advice and is the perfect guide for a keen dog-lover. The engaging and amusing illustrations are a mix of colour and monochrome which nicely break up the information.
