Excuse Me, is this India?
by Anushka Ravishankar
Age Range: 6-8
Aunt Anna regales her niece with wonderful stories while sewing a quilt full of pictures of the places she has travelled to and the things she has seen. “To warm me through winter she sewed me a quilt With pictures of all the things she had seen”. This is a story of a child’s imaginary travels resulting from hearing the stories that her Aunt Anna tells her. Every page has a different quilt image that takes the reader on a wonderful and colourful journey. The lilting, poetic text by Anushka Ravishankar is inspired by and woven around the exquisite quilt images by artist, Anita Leutwiler, who created pictures from the different fabrics she had collected during a trip to India. The illustrations are vibrant with their striking colours and the style that echoes the old quilting forms in India which have traditionally held the women’s memories of the past.
