Journey on a Cloud
by Véronique Massenot
Age Range: 6-8
Zephyr the postman lives in a small blue town of cheerful houses and flowering hills. Delivering the mail each day he has come to know every corner of the town well. In the evening Zephyr likes to gaze out of his attic window at the sky and watch how it changes colour and how the clouds constantly change shape while secretly dreaming of travelling to distant lands. The villagers believe that Zephyr is a daydreamer and that his thoughts of travel are fanciful. But one day Zephyr simply disappears on top of a cloud and his long journey through a world of colour begins.
This enchanting story by Véronique Massenot is inspired by the French artist Marc Chagall and introduces the reader to his work. The poetic prose is a mixture of flowing fonts and sizes while the colour swirls around the pages as Zephyr is introduced to different parts of the world. The richness of the colour illustrations by Élise Mansot really echo Chagall’s work and children and adults will be captivated both by the beautiful story and the art.
At the back of the book is a reproduction of the ‘Bride and Groom with Eiffel Tower’ by Marc Chagall painted in 1938-9, together with some useful facts about Chagall and his work. Another beautiful art book from Prestel in the ‘Pictures That Tell Stories: Art for Children’ series.
