Everyone Walks Away
by Eva Lindstrom
Age Range: Under_5
It’s always the same. Everyone walks away and Frank is left alone. Tilly, Paul and Milan are having fun playing together while Frank just feels lonely. Frank goes home and cries tears into a pan and then adds sugar, and cooks and stirs for hours. Frank is making jam, his very own recipe. Now he will invite the others for afternoon tea.
This unusual and quirky picture book by award-winning Swedish author and illustrator Eva Lindström, (author of My Dog Mouse), is multi-layered: its simple concept belies its depth as it focusses on loneliness, exclusion and belonging. The striking images, in a mixture of water colour and pencil etching, depict the emptiness on the page as the other children depart the park leaving Frank alone and the making of jam from his tears which captures his painful isolation is extremely poignant. As with My Dog Mouse Lindström is adept at displaying the fun the other children are enjoying while also portraying Frank’s despair.
