Vendela in Venice
by Christina Bjork
Age Range: 9-11
Vendela and her father have been reading and doing some research about Venice. To satisfy Vendela’s curiosity dad proposes that they go and visit this magical city. The book is divided into short chapters, each one dealing in chronological order with the events that take place during their stay, starting with their arrival at the airport, a vaporetto journey to the hotel, a visit to the
famous Floriani café, the visits to museums and their final departure back to Stockholm. The book has a fictional rather than a factual, non-fictional feel thanks to all the dialogue between the young girl and her father about the places that they visit.
Vendela in Venice is an ideal book to introduce a wellknown
tourist destination to young children. Fully illustrated in colour with plenty of samples of Venetian art, architecture and famous landmarks, it also contains a useful list of ‘things you might like to know about Venice’, including information on gondolas, painters, museums, as well as practical information such as Italian language hints and shopping. This book encourages young children to find out more and learn about other cultures in a friendly and easy-to-read style.
