Little Blue House (The)
by Sandra Comino
Age Range: 12+
In the small, remote town of Azul in rural Argentina there is a magical uninhabited
little white house that once a year changes its colour to blue (azul). 12-year-old
Cintia is a voracious reader and she pays frequent visits to the little house where
she finds refuge. She also goes there with Bruno, her best friend and the boy she
is in love with. In the little house Cintia enjoys the tranquillity and peace that she
does not get at home, as her father frequently abuses her, both physically and
mentally.
There is also a parallel story of a young native girl who many years ago
fell in love with the owner of the little house. Corruption is strongly present among
the leading political figures of the town and the Mayor wants to exploit the
unusual house as a tourist attraction, but most of all for his personal interest.
This is a poignantly written story with strong characterisation and a cleverly
constructed plot that will engage readers from beginning to end. Its subject
matter – love and also abuse – would make it suitable for older children, despite
the cover of the book indicating a younger audience.
