‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Adelheid Dahimene
Age Range: Under_5
Ageing donkeys Jenny and Jack are in love and have been for years, but when they have a row they decide to split up and go it alone. Will Jack and Jenny ever find anyone able to love them as much as they love each other, or will they decide to get back together?
Adelheid Dahimène has created two loveable if stubborn characters in Jenny and Jack and children will love following their adventures as they go their separate ways. The two donkeys end up in some amazing situations which Dahimène portrays wonderfully in her illustrations. Jenny and Jack are drawn with such care and attention to detail, giving distinct personalities to two characters who could otherwise appear nearly identical on the page. Perfectly pitched at the under-fives, Dahimène’s story is easy to follow but uses some longer words and also takes a simple look at the complexities of relationships to challenge the older end of the age range.
