Dinosaurs?!
by Lila Prap
Age Range: Under_5
There have been many books about Dinosaurs before but here is a new book by Slovenian artist Lila Prap with a difference. DINOSAURS is narrated by a family of chickens. The story begins with Mama Hen finding a book behind the house that claims that chickens are the descendants of dinosaurs. This causes some amazement from the chicken family and they set out to find out whether or not this is actually true.
The format of this book is clever and one that children will enjoy. On every page, beginning with the title page, there is a chick just hatching out of an egg. Each chick asks a question such as "What does the word DINOSAUR mean?" The answer is contained in the heading of the next two-page spread. Around the left hand margin and bottom of the left-hand page the family of chickens continue to question and converse about the topic. The right-hand border of every page gives more detailed information. In the middle of each spread a large dinosaur looms and a paragraph on the bottom of the right-hand page provides information about each individual dinosaur. The back end pages give an actual timeline of how chickens might have evolved from dinosaurs.
This is an innovative and fun way for children to learn about dinosaurs. The book is beautifully designed and the colours are rich and appealing. This is a great way of teaching children about the question/answer process of research as well as a useful information book too.
