Noor and Bobby
by Praline Gay-Para
Age Range: 6-8
Noor sits in an apartment building where his family live and watches as one by one his neighbours leave the besieged city. All the homes are now empty except for a lady who lives on the sixth floor. Every day Noor waits patiently for her to walk her dog, who he secretly names Bobby, and dreams of them being able to play together. Then, one day, the lady finally leaves but Bobby is left behind. The dog runs after the taxi taking his owner away and disappears from view. Noor is distraught and sets out across the ravaged city to search for the dog. Along the way, he discovers small signs of life and comes to the rescue of a bird trapped in barbed wire and provides shelter for a cat who has just had kittens, never losing hope that he will be once again reunited with Bobby.
Noor and Bobby is a moving story by French-Lebanese author Praline Gay-Para, translated by Alyson Waters. The word ‘war’ is never used but key words in the text such as “behind a wounded wall”, a bird being trapped in “barbed wire” or Noor climbing over “rubble” hint at the devastation from a military conflict. This is in sharp contrast to Noor’s love for Bobby and his acts of kindness which soften the more complex themes that remain unsaid.

French illustrator Lauranne Quentric's collage paper-cut artwork demonstrates a city that has been ravaged by war with its sombre greys and browns contrasted with the vivid red of Noor’s top. Noor’s anguish is adeptly conveyed when he is searching for Bobby along with the desolation of a broken city.
This beautiful and evocative picture book provides a message of hope and optimism in the face of adversity, putting love and kindness at its heart.
