A Day With Dogs
by Dorothee de Monfreid
Age Range: Under_5
What do dogs do all day? In this playful book by French author and illustrator Dorothée de Monfreid you can find all the answers!
As well as including lots of different breeds from a Pyrenean Shepherd, Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, St Bernard to a Border Collie, Dalmatian, Labrador, Yorkshire Terrier, Spaniel and Dachshund, the book covers their everyday lives in pages packed with detail. Whether it’s at home, getting up or going to bed, in the bathroom or kitchen there is plenty to look at. You can also see the dogs in the town visiting the doctor or supermarket, at school, at work, or having fun at an art class where some of the dogs decide to paint themselves different colours. They also visit the countryside, seaside and mountains. And still there is more: with pages on the seasons, colours, food, numbers, vehicles, vegetables and music.
A Day with Dogs has similarities to the popular American children’s author, Richard Scarry’s illustrative style. The meticulous attention to detail is wonderful. A ‘dolls house’ view of how the dogs live buzzes with activity and humour. As well as the delightful artwork of descriptive illustrations and vignettes, the text includes amusing conversations between the dogs. Young readers are going to relish this book especially if they are a dog-lover because there is just so much to look at.
Dorothée de Monfreid has a large following as a picture book author in the native France. A Day with Dogs is her third book published in English by Gecko Press – The Cake (2014) and Shhh! I’m Sleeping (2015).
