Time of The Young Soldiers (The)
by Hans Peter Richter
Age Range: 12+
The Time of Young Soldiers is Hans Peter Ritcher’s third book about his wartime experiences, this time focusing on the German Army which covers the war years from 1939 - 1945. Told from the German soldier's point of view it is made up of little vignettes of life as a soldier; some are amusing incidents whilst others are not so pleasant but they all give a snapshot view. Richter’s dispassionate narration of some of the horror of the war that he experienced, in particular, the amputation of his arm after being wounded, is chilling. All the more shocking because it is a true story.
Another of Richter’s books that gives us a valuable insight into what life was really like for the ordinary German soldier in the army and fighting on the Eastern Front.
