Meg the Egg
by Rita Antoinette Borg
Age Range: Under_5
Little Meg finds the sounds of the outside world a bit too loud and scary so she decides that she feels much safer staying inside the haven of her white shell. There are so many different noises - moos, oinks and quacks, but the worst one of all is the howling noise that Meg hears at night which she calls ‘Howls’. What Meg doesn’t know is that the noise belongs to a dangerous predator - a fox. Mother Hen is worried that if Meg does not hatch soon she will end up on the rubbish tip. When Mother Hen is taken by Howls Meg has to finally find her courage as she sets off on a mission to save her Mum while still inside her egg.
The simple watercolour illustrations capture the mood of the story as it progresses while the text uses the repetition of words, noises and actions making it perfect for reading aloud. The book deals with the fear of noise and the unknown, a message that Maltese author Rita Antoinette Borg has encapsulated in this uplifting story of overcoming obstacles and family bonds.
