Hattie
by Frida Nilsson
Age Range: 6-8
Six-year-old Hattie is a bright, savvy country girl in her first year of school. Hattie doesn’t live in the middle of nowhere, she lives just outside it, right next to no one at all. There are ducks and hens, a dog called Tacka and two stripy outdoor cats, Havana and Stick. Luckily she is about to start school which is sure to bring new adventures.
Hattie is mischievous and sometimes attracts trouble – from getting lost in the forest, carrying out some naughty capers on her fellow pupils, picking all the Lupines from a neighbours garden, or managing to get her first swimming badge after a couple of mishaps. Sometimes though, things just go wrong – like when the hairdresser Ben tells her ‘Tuft is cool’ and Hattie thinks this is what she wants because it’ll be just like her mum’s hairstyle. Unfortunately, Ben cuts her hair into stumps and to make matters worse it’s just before the school photos!
Swedish award-winning author Frida Nilsson has written a funny, illustrated chapter book, translated by Julia Marshall, which is full of warmth. Readers are sure to be endeared to Hattie’s independent spirit. The simple line pen and ink drawings by Stona Wirsén are comical and expressive and help to capture the loveable Hattie and her antics. Hattie is the perfect series for newly independent readers.
Other books by Frida Nilsson translated into English are The Ice Sea Pirates.
