Coffee Rabbit Snowdrop Lost
by Betina Birkjaer
Age Range: 6-8
“Autumn arrives, and as the trees lose more and more of their leaves, Grandpa loses more and more of his words. I collect all of Grandpa’s lost words in a box.”
In Danish author Betina Birkjær’s story Coffee Rabbit Snowdrop Lost , translated by Sinéad Quirke Køngerskov, readers follow Stump through navigating his grandfather Kaj’s onset of dementia, and they then get a chance to read an informational write-up about ‘Dementia and Memory’ by Ove Dahl, historian and head of the Danish Centre for Reminiscence.
Stump and his grandmother Gerda do not realise straight away why Kaj is beginning to forget names and confuse important parts of his life, but readers can follow as Kaj’s colour scheme deletes the warm red colour and adds in the sullen greys and blues within Anna Margrethe Kjærgaard’s illustrations. Once Stump and Gerda begin to understand the situation more clearly, they take it upon themselves not to force Kaj to remember what he forgets but to gently help Kaj by talking about happy memories of rabbits and weddings.
Stump’s handling of Kaj’s dementia—as his box of his grandpa’s lost words reminds him of how Kaj “used to be”—can serve as inspiration to any child struggling with a similar difficult situation.
