‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

What Feelings Like Best
by Tina Oziewicz
Age Range: 6-8
Another unique and captivating picture book from Polish author Tina Oziewicz following on from her international bestseller What Feelings Do When No One’s Looking. Oziewicz’s evocative way of breathing life and character into the feelings that make us who we are is beautifully executed.
Every time Nostalgia takes down the box of Christmas tree decorations, she remembers all the Decembers past. Having spent the year sleeping in a box they return all at once, one after another – “They barge inside in wet shoes and thick overcoats powdered with snow, bringing an aroma of mince pies”… Anxiety gets on with Curiosity because she is the only feeling that looks under the wardrobe where he’s hiding and Curiosity is never bored listening to the stories Anxiety tells. Patience loves to make jam and her closest friend is Calm, while Stubbornness likes to stick himself with glue to whatever surface is available and it’s up to Common Sense to sort him out.
There’s not a day that goes by without Worthlessness finding something valuable amongst the rubbish. She is always on the look-out for discarded bits of orange peel, a slice of lemon or fruit teabags to make her dustbin home a bit less stinky – “She doesn’t realise how odd it is that someone so gentle, so mild and sensitive to beauty lives in a dustbin, and sees the value in everything – except herself.” Courage’s older brother is Trust, he builds bridges; Malice is out to get Happiness, Calm, Contentment and Joy. Gratitude likes to go back to the good old times which can be hard to find because Memory has always packed them away.
The lilting poetic narrative, exquisitely translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones, is full of nuggets of wisdom explaining feelings and emotions and how they can interact with each other.
Aleksandra Zając’s stunning pen and ink fine-lined artwork with a palette of different shades of grey and the occasional hint of muted colour captures each feeling so wonderfully. The double-page spread of Worthlessness is particularly poignant.
A beautifully nuanced and crafted book that should be on every bookshelf.
