Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale
by Marcus Pfister
Age Range: Under_5
Rainbow Fish and his friends enjoy eating the krill (tiny shrimp) that populate the ocean floor near the reef. When a big blue whale comes into the area and starts eating the krill too, Jagged Fin Fish complains that the whale is watching them, and soon everyone views the large mammal as an enemy. The whale is hurt by the hostility and becomes angry chasing the fish into a cave and waving its tail so violently that the krill disperse leaving both the whale and fish hungry. Rainbow Fish realizes that he has to overcome his fear and approach the whale in order to make peace.
This story has a moral message showing that misunderstanding through lack of communication can result in intolerance. The glittering watercolour artwork is a mass of underwater blues, greens, and lavenders which is sure to appeal to young children.
