Greek Myths and Mazes
by Jan Bajtlik
Age Range: 9-11
Most books take the reader by the hand from the very first page to the very last page, continuing linearly the entire way through. While this style of writing has captivated readers since the beginning of book time, there still may be readers out there who yearn for a more challenging sense of adventure. How could a book possibly tackle form to be just as wild as the stories themselves?
This is a question that has been ingeniously answered by Polish author and illustrator Jan Bajtlik. His book Greek Myths and Mazes, translated into English by Zosia Krasodomska-Jones, has greatly oversized pages, and it is riddled with routes and roads that twist and turn while telling the just-as-twining stories of Greek mythology. Any reader of this book will transform into an explorer, learning stories while simultaneously navigating the mazes. Without a doubt, the labyrinths will trick young and old readers alike—and readers are likely to run into new discoveries upon each read-through.
As an educational tool, this book teaches about “gods, heroes, fantastic creatures, and historical events,” introduces the reader to “Hercules and the Argonauts, the Minotaur and the Cyclopes, Sisyphus, Odysseus, and beautiful Helen of Troy,” and transports the pages into “the Olympic games, a Greek theater, and the Athenian Acropolis.” What could be a more captivating read than that?
