by Minu Kim
Age Range: Under_5
A little boy follows his big brother and his friends outside as they set off on a bike ride. “Stay here. We’re too fast for you” his big brother tells him, “I’m fast too” replies the boy as he hurries along after them on his pushbike. However, despite his best efforts, he can’t keep up and soon finds himself alone and miserable. Until that is, he meets an unexpected friend who shows him that maybe going at your own pace isn’t so bad after all!
This charming debut picture book from Korean author and illustrator Minu Kim, translated by Mattho Mandersloot, shows children it’s not necessary to strive to keep up with everyone else and it’s perfectly okay to go at their own pace.
With minimum text, it is the magnificent and intricate black-and-white drawings that make it stand out. Brightened with small dashes of red and a burst of beautiful watercolour double-page spreads as the book reaches its conclusion, this Korean book is a welcome addition to translated children’s literature.
Kim worked as a planning manager for numerous animated series including Larva (a South Korean 3D computer-animated TV series).
