‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Daniel and Ismail
by Juan Pablo Iglesias
Age Range: 6-8
Daniel and Ismail share the same birthday, they have each been given a precious gift from their families – Daniel a tallit shawl and Ismail, a keffiyeh patterned scarf – and each has a brand-new football.
The next day while playing in the park with their new footballs they run into each one another. Soon they are playing football together and having so much fun that they lose track of time. As darkness descends, they hurry home but not before mistakenly taking each other’s important gift. From the reactions they receive the boys slowly come to realise they are different – one is Jewish and the other Palestinian –
and come from different backgrounds, faiths and cultures as well as there being a gaping political divide.
This unusual multilingual book, first written in Spanish by Chilean author Juan Pablo Iglesias, has been translated into English by Ilan Stavans, into Hebrew by Eliezer Nowodworski and Frieda Press-Danieli and into Arabic by Randa Sayegh.
Iglesias’s simple and up-lifting story, with a format of reading right to left, belies a more complex message of cultural constraints within communities and political differences that can keep people apart despite them sharing similarities and being fundamentally the same.
The bold Charcoal illustrations by Alex Peris on rich primary colour backgrounds of different shades are so evocative and convey the different emotions of the two boys as they struggle to understand the significance of their inadvertent swap of gifts.
Daniel and Ismail is part of the Reading the World: Picture Books and Translation at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, 2022.
