Anything But a Grabooberry
by Anushka Ravishankar
Age Range: 6-8
Just what is a grabooberry? This is a wacky book which aims to combine nonsense verse with bold typographical tricks. Using two colours, red and green, the type forms images which suggest the words it is depicting. Sometimes the imagery is straightforward (the ‘o’ in ‘orange’ looks like the fruit); sometimes it needs to be thought about (the smudgy red typeface representing ‘a black cloud’). The verse itself is exuberant and imaginative:
“I wouldn’t mind if I could be a 12-armed Octopus
or a pin-striped hippo-po-po-po-potamus
anything anything I’d like to be ...
but please please please please not a grabooooberry”.
The collaboration of Anushka Ravishankar, one of India’s pioneering nonsense verse writers, and book designer, Rathna Ramanathan has created a book that will be irresistible to children.
