Bear's Lost Glasses
by Leo Timmers
Age Range: Under_5
Bear has lost his glasses. He thinks he’s left them at Giraffe’s house so he sets off to retrieve them. Along the way, he encounters some strange animals he has never seen before in the forest – a crocodile, a flamingo, a deer and even “a spotty long-necked snake lying on Giraffe’s deckchair!.” Bear’s patient friend Giraffe finds his glasses just where Bear left them, perched on his head!
Belgium author and illustrator Leo Timmer’s hilarious book, translated from Dutch by David Colmer, is a playful story about an endearing cheerful Bear whose near-sightedness results in some funny encounters as he fails to realise that his missing glasses are the cause of the misinterpretation of his surroundings. Timmer’s animals are always full of character and humour. Giraffe’s scepticism, demonstrated through his raised eyebrows, when Bear shows him all the new animals he has discovered, is so beautifully captured.
As publisher Julia Marshall says in the publicity blurb, the author “draws enormous fun from a very simple premise – the story is imaginative, absurd and wholly relatable.”
