Sato the Rabbit
by Yuki Ainoya
Age Range: 6-8
“One day, Haneru Sato became a rabbit. He’s been a rabbit ever since.” In the first of three ‘Sato the Rabbit’ stories, Michael Blaskowsky translates Japanese author Yuki Ainoya’s magical landscape powered by imagination. Ainoya’s painted images of a boy in a rabbit suit exploring his world and conjuring up wondrous adventures fit within the realm of the classic children’s book illustration style, similar to those in the books of Eric Carle.
The short, present-tense, imperative sentences allow the readers to almost jump into the book and become Sato; the narration is reminiscent of a sort of choose-your-own-adventure approach. At the beginning of the book after Sato becomes a rabbit, readers are told to “go around the house … and walk into the forest behind it” to eventually find a small pond that becomes magical. Young readers will relish in the dreamy images of endless possibilities—imagination even turns mundane laundry hanging on a clothesline into ships sailing in a sea of grass.
