A Journey of 600 Inches
by Zhang Xiaoling
Age Range: 6-8
It’s hard growing up. So, how about growing down instead? Maisie and Paul in A Journey of 600 Inches are left having to look after themselves like grown-ups because their parents are working in the hospital to help out during the pandemic. The brother and sister cannot go outside, so they measure the inside of their home, discovering it is 600 inches. Maybe that’s not that big to some, but it certainly becomes incredibly big for Maisie and Paul, as they magically shrink to the size of ants!
A Journey of 600 Inches is part of Cardinal Media’s series called Hopeful Picture Books, showing the pandemic through a child’s eyes. Or, in this case, through their ant-eye-sized eyes! Chinese author Zhang Xiaoling and translator Helen Wang make Maisie and Paul’s adventure captivating, complete with new characters, like the Mouse King and Mr Frog, and new places, like Lost Toy Park.
Even though it may all seem like fun and games, all of the books in the Hopeful Picture Book series contain essences of humanity through social and emotional learning. Illustrator Yan Qing portrays the image of the disproportionate children making a phone call to their dad on a giant telephone, as well as the children holding their mom’s hairclip, now almost the size of a pillow. The children truly miss their parents, but they are still able to come up with ways to have a bit of fun when being alone together and growing up.
