Up, Down & Other Opposites with Ellsworth Kelly
by Phaidon
Age Range: Under_5
Part of the concept board book series featuring fine art, this quirky early-learning children’s book is the first of its kind to celebrate the paintings of Ellsworth Kelly. Created in collaboration with the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation, the stylishness and playfulness invites young readers to explore the theme of opposites through art.
With over 25 works of art by one of the world’s leading abstract artists, images this book include some of Kelly’s most famous pieces as well as lesser-known works. The variety of shapes, size and colour together with the conversational commentary make it engaging and fun as young readers can learn to recognise opposites. The pairings range from: short/tall, horizontal/vertical to empty/full and back/front. For example: huge/tiny is represented by a big black square opposite a square full of y a mass of tiny rainbow coloured squares, while apart/together shows a series of coloured squares apart opposite the same squares snuggled up together.
Up, Down & Other Opposites with Ellsworth Kelly is a sophisticated and clever concept book for young children which is ideal for visual comprehension and vocabulary as well as art appreciation.
At the back of the book there is a short biography ‘About the Artist’.
Ellsworth Kelly was a famous American abstract painter and sculpture born in 1923. Kelly only ever used simple shapes, curves and lines and he used the world around him for inspiration.
