365 Penguins
by Jean-Luc Fromental
Age Range: 6-8
What do you do when penguins start being delivered to your door? On the first day of the New Year, the postman brings a surprise – a penguin in a box! One by one, day by day, penguins begin to fill the house; there are penguins everywhere. At first it is a novelty, but with every passing day, the penguins’ number increases along with the family’s problems. Feeding them is a nightmare and the smell of fish is overwhelming: they are noisy, cleaning is impossible, finding space for them in the house is a monumental task and they take over the bathroom! Just how will the family cope if they receive any more, and more importantly, who is sending them and why?
365 Penguins is a quirky large format book by French author Jean-Luc Fromental and internationally acclaimed illustrator Jöelle Jolivet. This is not just an ordinary counting book; it’s particularly useful for maths and times tables as the penguins keep multiplying which is a great way to introduce repeated addition. There are messages too about overpopulation, global warming and the necessity of caring for the animals we share the planet with.
Every page of the book is busy with differing sizes of text and loud, bright illustrations that use five main colours – black and white, orange, blue and brown. The zany humour helps to make this a really fun interactive book.
