Amazing Octopus: Creature From An Unknown World
by Michael Stavaric
Age Range: 9-11
Full of humour and vivid descriptions this is a delightfully quirky non-fiction title “as unusual as the octopus itself.” Beautifully produced with a mix of black and gold printing together with exquisite fine-lined black and white artwork by German illustrator Michèle Ganser that is packed with fascinating detail of octopuses and their natural habitat.
From the very first page, it exudes fun with its chatty narrative by Czech-born, Vienna-based author, translator and lecturer Michael Stavaric, translated from German by Oliver Latsch, but this belies the incredible amount of information contained in each chapter. As well as learning the origins of octopuses – they have roamed the oceans for 400 million making them the oldest intelligent creatures on the planet – it includes information about where they live, how they are masters of deception, how they reproduce, use their eyes and Octopus ink.
As well as the wealth of information about octopuses there are plenty of interactive elements from a nicely set out gold-edged and printed text section at the end of each chapter entitled ‘For Brighter Minds’ with yet more fascinating facts. A question posed by the author – “Did you notice, for example, that I gave you eight answers about what I wanted to be when I was a child? And that I chose eight of my favourite animals in the ocean? Well! Better concentr-eight harder in future!” is followed by an empty page where the reader can add their own details of what they want to be when they grow up. There are ‘Eight Other Octythings’; ‘Eight Ink-Redible Jokes To Tell Your Friends’; plenty of spot-the-difference puzzles and at the back of the book ‘Do You Want to Know More? with suggestions of books, films and online resources.
Amazing Octopus is very accessible and readable and will particularly appeal to young readers who are interested in the natural world as well as being a perfect title for use in the classroom or library.
