Whose Lovely Child Can You Be?
by Shobha Viswanath
Age Range: Under_5
Gulgul is not really sure where she came from. When she hears a rumour that she is not her parents’ child she is understandably upset and confused. Her family then decides to tell her the story of the magical day she entered their lives.
This is a heartwarming story dealing with the subject of adoption. What Gulgul comes to realise over the course of this story is that a sense of belonging and being loved go well beyond any blood ties. Indian author and co-founder of Karadi Tales, Shobha Viswanath has created a sensitive tale written in verse with each member of the family reassuring Gulgul of the genuine love they feel for her.
“Amma, I heard Sandhya say
That I’m not your child, I’m a stray”
Gulgul’s mother replies:
“Shall we tell our Gulgul dear
How it happened that she’s hear?
Shall we tell this lovely child
How she came into our lives?”
Christine Tappin’s expressive illustrations in lovely acrylic pastel hues enhance the warmth and affection shown to Gulgul by her family. An ideal book to use for tackling sensitive issues like adoption and foster parents.
