diminished, we are starved’

Bilal wa Amer
by Nabiha Mheidly
Age Range: Under_5
Bilal wa Amer was included in the ‘Reading the Way’: Inclusive Books from Around the World Research (2015). The book is not available in English but is referred to as Bilal and Amer throughout the RtW Research. (Full report in the Education Zone of this website)
Bilal and Amer are neighbours and the best of friends. Amer uses a wheelchair. When they play basketball, Bilal often wins, but when they race each other Amer is the quickest.
OIW were pleased to see the positive depiction of a wheelchair user in Bilal and Amer but felt that there are many books throughout the world that are similar. Although the message in the book was positive there were strong reservations about both the story, in terms of length and plot, and the dated illustrations. However, Bilal and Amer might be useful as a teaching aim rather than for the general UK children's market.
Bilal and Amer was selected from the 2013 IBBY Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities (no: 52).
