‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our

diminished, we are starved’

Pact of Wolves
by Nina Blazon
Age Range: 12+
This mystery story begins with Blanka being given a guided tour of her new school – Europa International. She has come here to get away from a painful home life, blighted by a discovery that has changed her completely. Things quickly begin to go wrong for Blanka, as she gets on the wrong side of The Wolves, an elite school society that likes to walk around wearing sinister old fashioned masquerade masks and costumes. Blanka then walks headlong into disaster, as she finds the body of a woman in the school library, late at night.
Disturbed by this discovery, Blanka sets out to find out who the mystery woman is and also tries to uncover the history of The Wolves. But as she delves deeper into the school’s background, it becomes clear that someone doesn’t want her to do so, as sinister things start to happen to her. All the time, Blanka also feels an unknown, indescribable presence in the school, and is determined to learn exactly who or what it is. Eventually, with help from her mysterious new friend Nicholas, who also seems to have trouble with The Wolves, a shocking truth is uncovered and a hair raising night time adventure begins.
Pact of Wolves is gripping and suspenseful; Nina Blazon very quickly draws you in, by opening with so much mystery, urging you to read on. The translation makes the story clear, but the plot did seem to move very quickly in places and so some children may find this novel a little fast-paced.
Nina Blazon creates a very exciting world however with an exciting element of the supernatural that even those who are not lovers of fantasy can believe in because it is moored in the day to day trials and tribulations of a schoolgirl. Blanka is also a very likeable heroine who should appeal to both genders. She is smart, determined and resourceful and she has some truly frightening adventures. Lovers of Anthony Horowitz’s Alex Rider novels will probably find some similarities to the teenage hero, although the setting of the story is different.
