International Translation Prizes and Awards
The ArabLit Story Prize is an award for the best short stories, in any genre, newly translated from Arabic into English. Translators must have secured rights to the work, and translations must have been previously unpublished. The $500 prize is divided between the author and the translator (except in cases where the work is in the public domain). Shortlisted stories will have the opportunity to be published in ArabLit Quarterly magazine as well as a future anthology. Astrid Lindgren Prize, International Federation of Translators
FIT(the Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs/International Federation of Translators) has an international translation prize designed to promote the translation of children’s literature, improve the quality thereof and draw attention to the role of translators in bringing the peoples of the world closer together in terms of culture. The prize is sponsored by the Astrid Lindgren Fund, based on a generous donation made by the author herself.
The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award
Established by the Swedish Government in 2002 and administered by the Swedish Arts Council, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award is given annually to authors, illustrators and promoters of reading whose work reflects the spirit of Astrid Lindgren.
The Bologna Ragazzi Award is one of the most prestigious prizes in children’s publishing aimed at selecting the best-illustrated books. There are four main Award categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Opera Prima (for unpublished authors and illustrators), and Comics. The jury also gives a special New Horizons award to a particularly innovative book.
The Global Literature in Libraries Initiative (GLLI) Translated YA Book Prize
The GLLI Translated YA Book Award aims to recognize publishers, translators, and authors of books in English translation for young adult readers. The award has been established to honour the most outstanding translated work originally written and published (or simultaneously published) in a language other than English.
Hans Christian Andersen Awards
The Hans Christian Andersen Award is the highest international recognition given to an author and an illustrator of children's books. The Awards have been given biennially since 1956 by an international jury from nominations received from IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) sections from all around the world. They recognize lifelong achievement and are presented to an author and an illustrator whose complete works have made an important, lasting contribution to children's literature.
John Glassco Translation Prize
The John Glassco Prize is awarded by the Literary Translators’ Association of Canada. It recognises excellence in literary translation and the talent and dedication of the next generation of literary translators. The prize is awarded for a literary translator's first book-length literary translation into French or English, published in Canada during the previous year. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and children's literature are eligible. The winner receives a $1000 prize and a one-year membership to the LTAC.
The Mildred L. Batchelder Award
This award was set up in 1966 in honour of Mildred L. Batchelder, a former executive director of the Association for Library Services to Children, a believer in the importance of good books for children in translation from all parts of the world. It is awarded annually to an American publisher for a children's book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign country, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States.
The Warwick Prize for Women in Translation
The Warwick Prize for Women in Translation, established in 2017 and administered by the University of Warwick, is an annual prize honouring a translated work by a female author published in English by a UK-based or Irish publisher during the previous calendar year. The prize includes works of fiction for children or young adults. Only works written by a woman are eligible; the gender of the translator is immaterial. The £1,000 prize is divided evenly between the author and the translator or goes entirely to the translator(s) in cases where the writer is no longer living.
