‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our

diminished, we are starved’

Chief Cellist (The)
by Wenhua Wang
Age Range: 6-8
Mr Zibra is the Chief Cellist of the Caramel Pudding Symphony Orchestra. He is one of the best cellists in the world, but he is a mean, miserly and cold man who does not get on with anyone. He's also a bit of a diva: demanding the best food and drink to be served to him before a performance and always being driven around everywhere in a chauffeur-driven limousine.
When Mr Zibra, or 'The Chief' as he likes to be known, is left stranded by his chauffeur he does not want to take the bus to his hotel so he finds himself waiting in the rain. Three meaningful encounters follow: first with a lady who lives on the street, then a dog in the forest and finally an orchestra made up of children from the Good Tidings Orphanage who are playing what The Chief considers to be the most atrocious music. Each experience takes him on a steep learning curve demonstrating that despite his fame and fortune, showing kindness and helping people brings far more rewards.
This is another charming tale from Taiwanese author Wenhua Wang, illustrated by Amann Wang. Like Mr Horton's Violin – it is a modern-day fable with a wise message. What is appealing about this book is its wit and originality that children are sure to enjoy.
