Babar the King
by Jean de Brunhoff
Age Range: 6-8
King Babar wants to build a town in the land of the elephants. All the planning and design is done by Babar himself. The new town of Celesteville is magnificent when it is finished with a Palace of Work and a Palace of Pleasure, with each elephant having a house of his own. Babar arranges a Garden Party in celebration and everyone spends time preparing – the gardeners are busy getting the gardens ready, the children practice their special song for Babar and the cooks prepare delicious cakes and pastries. On the day everyone has a wonderful time.
Created by Jean de Brunhoff in 1931 from an original bedtime story by his wife, this is one of the seven Babar stories he wrote. Babar has continued to live on through the work of his son Laurent de Brunhoff who has kept his spirit alive for more than 50 years.
