Hippos Can Swim
by Pablo Bernasconi
Age Range: Under_5
Hippo is afraid of water and while he sits on the shore and watches his friends swimming in the lagoon he wonders what everyone else does for fun. First, he encounters a group of rabbits skipping with a rope. Hippo has a go, but unfortunately he cannot jump. Next, he finds a tree full of chirping birds and he tries to climb the tree but is too heavy. Later he meets a badger and forces himself to squeeze inside their tiny habitat. After several other attempts at different things Hippo decides finally to confront his fear of water. He is amazed to discover that he can swim after all and that it is the best thing in the whole world.
This is a book that holds an important message for the young reader: that you should accept yourself for what you are, value your skills and that everyone has a special talent or ability. The artwork is exquisite and the characters are bursting with expression and the text conveys a gentle humour. This is another original book written and illustrated by one of the most talented children’s book artists working in today’s demanding and challenging publishing market.
This title is now out of print but copies can still be found on Amazon, Abe Books and Ebay.
