Day Mother had a Face Like a Teapot (The)
by Raquel Saiz
Age Range: 6-8
When Mark breaks his mother’s favourite jug she becomes very angry and starts to blow smoke through her nose like a dragon. Gradually she metamorphosises into a teapot – first she gets a teapot face, then her nose turns into a funny spout while her left ear changes into a handle! With the teapot in his hand Mark goes out into the street to get some help. He goes to his neighbour, Mrs Peters who has fallen asleep, then he goes to his grandmother who recommends they call upon Uncle John, and so on until a multitude of characters start to appear throughout the pages. But could all this have been a terrible nightmare? Well this is for the reader to find out.
This is a very original and highly sophisticated picture book in terms of the surrealist story with highly expressive illustrations by Spanish illustrator. Joāo Vaz de Carvalho The puppet-like characters have few individual distinctive characteristics but provide a perfect match for the text.
