Winter When Time was Frozen (The)
by Els Pelgrom
Age Range: 12+
During the last months of the war in Holland, 12-year-old Noortje is forced to flee with her father after the battle of Arnhem in 1944. They find refuge in the country with the kindly Everingen family at Klaphek Farm. Noortje is a city child but her new life offers many pleasures from caring for the animals to playing with her new friend Evert.
However, the war is omnipresent and tragedy is never far away. Hungry people are always turning up at the farm and German officers requisition living space to billet their soldiers as the Allies advance. Then there is baby Sarah, a child of a Jewish family hidden in the woods, whom Noortje helps her Aunt Janna to deliver during one night in their hideout. When it becomes too dangerous to keep Sarah with them because of her constant crying she is taken in by the Everingens. After Sarah’s family are discovered and taken away she continues to live at the farm looked after by Noortje and Aunt Janna.
This is a richly textured and many faceted novel. Noortje moves from childhood to a new maturity as she experiences a whole range of emotions and fears. The author was born in Arnhem and experienced the consequences firsthand. Her memories of those final days of the war form the basis of The Winter When Time was Frozen. It was awarded the Dutch literary prize for best children’s book of the year in 1978.
