‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Sylvia Van Ommen
Age Range: 6-8
Two friends text each other arranging to meet up in the park. Jori brings the sweets while Oscar is responsible for the drinks. Underneath the shadow of a big tree they eat their sweets and drink their coffee. But soon, inspired by the blue sky, they start to speculate about life after death. Would they be going up there? And, if so, would it be easy for them to meet? Would they encounter anyone else in heaven or would it be very crowded and impossible to recognise each other? Would there be sweets there? They start making sensible and practical arrangements and provisions for their future meeting.
A picture book that tackles questions that most children tend to ask, but adults find difficult to answer. This is a wonderful, touching and very unusual picture book about friendship, illustrated in black-and-white line drawings that beautifully portray the deep philosophical message of the written text.
