‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
Dreaming in Black and White
by Reinhardt Jung
Age Range: 9-11
‘There are dreams you can’t switch off. I used to be sorry I couldn’t get back
into my dreams. Now I’m afraid of what’s sure to happen next’. In his dreams,
Hannes is transported back to 1930s Nazi Germany. Because of his physical
disability he is singled out for persecution, first in the form of bullying from
some of his fellow pupils, and secondly by the over-zealous Nazi teacher, Mr
Lang, who follows rigidly the Nazi doctrine laid down by the Third Reich: the
persecution of the Jews and the refusal to tolerate imperfection. Hannes finds
solace in the unquestioning love of his mother and Hilde, his Jewish friend.
However, his father is swayed by the Nazi propaganda and is prepared to sign
the crucial papers that will seal Hannes’ fate.
