‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Goldie at the Orphanage
by Martha Sandwall-Bergstrom
Age Range: 6-8
Goldie is discovered as a baby by a fisherman after a shipwreck and is placed
in an orphanage. She is lonely at first, but once a new girl, Lotta arrives, they
soon become good friends and begin to have some fun. However, this comes
to an abrupt end once they have turned seven years old. When children reach
this age they must begin to work and every year there is an auction of
orphans. The two girls will be auctioned off to the highest bidder and will have
to adjust to a new life.
Martha Sandwall-Bergström based this story on her own experiences of growing up as a young girl in a poor area of Sweden. Eva Stålsjö’s beautiful, lively watercolour illustrations complement this heart-warming story.
