‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Sergei Mikhalkov
Age Range: 6-8
Rabbit-Nose-in-the-Air encounters a hunter asleep under a tree with his gun by his side. Tired of being threatened by the malicious fox Rabbit-Nose-in-the-Air decides to steal the gun and pay a visit to the fox's house threatening to shoot her if she doesn't leave. He then takes ownership of the house and with the gun for protection is full of self-importance and over-confident. But will Rabbit-Nose-in-the-Air be able to fulfil his dream of living in fox's house undisturbed or will fox, with the help of her friend wolf, be able to outwit him and regain possession of her property?
This delightful story by Russian author Sergei Mikhalkov (1913-2009) was written as a play in two acts to perform with puppets or for children on the stage. Mikhalkov was a well-known Russian children's author and for his satirical fables like this classic tale of Rabbit-Nose-in-the-Air. He also wrote the lyrics of the Russian's national anthem. E. Rachev's drawings perfectly capture the spirit of the text and the mischievous characters and situations in the story.
