‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Tove Jansson
Age Range: 9-11
Tove Jansson’s ‘Moomin’ books have become modern-day classics. They first appeared in 1945 and continued until 1971 by which time 11 titles had been published. Jansson was Finnish but she wrote the books in Swedish and did all the illustrations herself. Puffin Books have published several titles in the Moomin series.
The Moomin family has settled down to hibernate through the winter, except for Moomintroll who suddenly wakes up and finds he cannot get back to sleep again. So he sets out to explore the outside world which is deep in snow and ice, and finds a wonderland that is both frightening and beautiful. His amusing attempts at skiing, and his kindhearted efforts to feed the creatures who are hungry with Moominmamma’s jam are a delight to read.
This classic series by Tove Jansson never ages and is as enjoyable today as when it was written, and the amusing antics of the Moomin family and their friends remain undiminished. Often woven into the stories and carefully disguised are little moral lessons and philosophical observations made by the characters that add authenticity
