Happy Times in Noisy Village
by Astrid Lindgren
Age Range: 6-8
Happy Times in Noisy Village follows the lives of six children and their families living on their neighbouring farms in the middle of the countryside – North Farm, South Farmhouse and Middle Farmhouse. Everybody calls them the Noisy Village because the children who live there are very noisy indeed!
The narrator is Lisa, who lives with her two brothers at Middle Farm. The stories describe their daily family life and everyday incidents, which are often turned into adventures by the children as they play together. Racing their sledges on the slopes, looking out for pirates, and hiding out in their robbers’ den the children from Noisy Village always manage to have fun. This is a charming collection of stories from one of the world's best-loved children's authors Astrid Lindgren as it follows the lives of the children of Noisy Village providing cultural nuances of Swedish customs and depicting the traditional rural life in pre-war Sweden which was described by the author as ‘The Little House on the Prairie of Sweden’.
Lindgren structured the book as a series of simple self-contained stories and this new edition by OUP with charming black and white illustrations by Mini Grey, (earlier editions with illustrations by Tony Ross), bring the children and their escapades to life.
There are two further titles in the Noisy Village series: The Children of Noisy Village and Nothing But Fun in Noisy Village.
