Peter's Old House
by Elsa Beskow
Age Range: 6-8
Peter once was a sailor; he has travelled to many places in the world and can speak many languages. Now Peter lives in a rather shabby and dilapidated old house that has seen better days.
Peter loves to tell the local children about his adventures at sea, he plays musical instruments and makes toy sailing boats that he gives to them. He is a much-loved member of the community and when he is threatened by an official with having his house pulled down if he doesn’t get it repaired by the following week the children set out to help him.
Peter’s Old House is a charming story with a wonderful social message about caring for each other by Swedish author and illustrator Elsa Beskow, who was regarded as the Beatrix Potter of Scandinavia. Her watercolour illustrations are beautifully executed with such attention to detail.
