Felipa and the Day of the Dead
by Birte Muller
Age Range: Under_5
When Felipa’s beloved grandmother Abuelita dies she feels terribly sad. In an attempt to comfort Felipa, her parents tell her that when people die their souls live on forever and that Abuelita’s soul is with the spirits, high up in the mountains. Felipa decides to try and find Abuelita’s soul and she sets off towards the mountains. When her dad finds her, he explains that souls live in their own world, but every year in November they come to visit and there
is a big celebration. The long awaited day of celebration arrives and Felipa feels close to Abuelita again.
A wonderful picture book that introduces children to the feelings of loss and death in a very sensitive way. The simple, almost childlike illustrations bring to life the rich colours of traditional South American culture.
